The 2009 National Golden Gloves begins Monday, May 4th in Salt Lake City, UT. The Circle of Discipline has three amateur boxers competing in the tournament, two of those boxers are ranked #1 in the nation. This is Jamal James fifth National Golden Gloves tournament. He will be competing in the light welterweight division (141 lbs). Jamal brought home the bronze medal in 2008 and 2006. This is Javontae Starks second National Golden Gloves tournament and he will be competing in the welterweight division (152 lbs). Finally, Jonathon Perez will be making his senior division debut competing in the flyweight division (112 lbs). Jonathon has been competing in the Junior division of amateur boxing since the age of 12 and has graduated to the senior division this year. The coaches working their corner for this tournament are Adonis Frazier (head coach) and Sierra Leone Samuels (assistant coach).
Jamal will be competing this evening. Jonathon got a bye so he will not be competing until Wednesday, May 6th. Javontae's weight division begins their tournament tomorrow, May 5th. Be sure to stay posted to the blog to find out how the Circle of Discipline team progresses throughout the tournament.
